ST. JOHANNES BERCHMANS SCHOOL FOSTERS ENVIRONMENTAL LOVE WITH EDUCATION AT PIK2 GREENBELT
A cheerful and energetic atmosphere filled Greenbelt PIK2 from June 9-11, 2025, when dozens of students from St. Johannes Berchmans School participated in environmental education activities that were not just fun but also meaningful. For three consecutive days, children from three different grade levels were invited to learn directly in nature, a learning approach that is getting more and more important to foster a generation that cares about the environment.
Greenbelt PIK2, a ±60-hectare green open space spread along the riverbank and surrounded by more than 9,200 trees, became a natural stage for a fun learning process. More than just a place for recreation, the greenbelt has evolved into a living ecological laboratory, where children can understand the importance of protecting the Earth firsthand, through real-life experiences.
On a daily basis, around 40 to 60 students take part in various educational activities. Starting from interactive games, sing-alongs, exposure to wildlife, to hands-on practice of making Eco Enzyme and Compost-Tea, which is environmentally friendly liquid compost made from household organic waste. They were also introduced to a variety of coastal and migratory birds that make Greenbelt PIK2 their home.
More than just an outdoor activity, this program opens the children's eyes to the biodiversity around them. Seeing migratory birds up close, touching the soil, smelling the compost, and feeling the breeze while learning, becomes an experience that cannot be replaced by a screen or textbook.
“Environmental education is not only about theory, but direct experience that makes an impression on the heart,” that is the philosophy of this activity. Children not only learn to recognize, but also feel an emotional connection with nature and this will be the root of their long-term concern for the environment.
Through this activity, St. Johannes Berchmans School taught the students the important value of protecting the environment starting from simple things: sorting waste, making compost, and respecting wildlife. Hopefully, one day they will grow into a generation who are not only smart, but also wise and empathetic towards the earth where they live.
Greenbelt PIK2 also proves itself as a natural classroom that bridges formal education with real-life experiences, where every tree, insect, and flowing river becomes a patient teacher instilling love, awareness, and responsibility for the environment.
